The dead beat (center)second was invented in the late 1950s; most probably for so called "Doctors watches". The visualisation of the progression of each single second is far better as at the classic "stealthy" central second indications. Especially if one has to concentrate on counting at the same time – like the pulse of humans.

Even the functionality of the jumping second is very simple; the main concern is the life-cycle of a high-level watch. A small spring is pre-tensed through the traingear and it can unwind at once – according to the vibration frequency of the balance-wheel; at each 6th (21.600 A/h) or 8th (28.800 A/h) releasing of the anchor (=1 second).

In doing so the second wheel (on which the second-pointer is located) gets suddenly carried along one partition.

The time of this jump only lasts a few hundredths of seconds – this is the reason why the course of movement seems so much more accurate as at each electronic-watch.

The largest and most famous producer of movements with jumping second has been the manufacturing "Chézard" named after the town where the manufacture was based. The offered calibres where 115/116 and the later simplified 7400. Chézard was member of the Ebauches SA starting from 1937 until 1969 as the production was closed.

Habring² had a limited number of brand new movements of the calibre 116 available for the realisation of the jumping second 2005. Due to the surprisingly great success of this model and the increasing demand for this "simple complication" this was one of the most important issues for us as we started developing our "own" automatic-movement A07. This clockwork was presented to public first time at Basel World 2007 and is meanwhile available with different additional functions.

During summer 2008 the automatic-movement A07 with jumping second and big date was accompanied again by the puristic manual variation with only three hands from the centre of the dial. The so called A07M model substitutes the meanwhile no longer available Chézard 116.

Habring² with its calibres A07 and A07M has been the very first manufacturer worldwide restarting in 2007 to produce a movement with jumping second as "simple complication" out of proprietary development. Some others followed meanwhile.
